Perry Township
Firefighters faced a rapidly spreading garage fire on Sunday morning in
Vanderburgh County. The fire originated in the garage and was noticed by a
neighbor who then awoke the two occupants. Dispatch informed responding
firefighters they had received numerous phone calls. Chief Bulger requested
one Engine to be placed on standby by German Township. When Chief Jerry
Bulger arrived he declared a working fire activation which then begins an
automatic moveup within the mutual aid system.
Chief Bulger
had the crew deploy the first 1 3/4" handline from E4 to the rear entrance
of the garage. 2 firefighters began attacking the fire from the rear and
made considerable headway into slowing the forward progress of the fire. The
rear entrance was partially blocked by storage of personal items by the
occupants. The second handline was deployed into the front door of the
structure to protect exposures and move into the garage area. The second
line rapidly made entry into the garage area and stopped the spread of the
fire. There were no hydrants in close proximity - second due Engine laid out
over 1200 feet of 5" hose. Positive pressure ventilation and salvage
operations were begun early in the offensive operations. The origin of the
fire was in the garage but an exact cause has not been officially
determined.
