Fire in attic of home on Campground Rd, mutual aid by suburban FDs
McCutchanville Fire Department responded to a house fire on Old State Road
Saturday January 20, 2007 at 0510 hours. Vanderburgh County Sheriff deputies
were the first to arrive and rescued the two occupants before the arrival of the
fire department. The fire started in the attic area and the occupants did not
know their house was on fire.
McCutchanville E-10 arrived on scene a short time later and rapidly extinguished
the fire with minimal additional damage. The fire originated above the ceiling
on the second floor and extended to the roof. There was a passerby that saw the
heavy smoke but could not see the fire when 911 was called. Captain Ben Woodard
commanded the first due engine and requested an Engine from German Township to
assist. Firefighter Joey O'Neal found the missing dog inside the house that made
the family very happy as they had two dogs and one had left the house but the
second was missing. Engineer Jim Woodard kept a stable water supply as the fire
hydrant was about 100 feet away. District Chief Randy Mitchell had command of
the incident and kept the incident from escalating.
Firefighters had to remove the ceiling on the second floor and used the TIC to
make sure there were no additional hot spots. Fire was knocked down and
equipment returned to service by 0730 hours.
