It was physically impossible to tear down and rebuild Company 8 (Kasson Drive) because the lot size on which it sits is too small. Although we investigated purchasing additional property or building a new fire station at a different location at an estimated cost of $400,000-500,000 it proved to be cost prohibitive. The Indiana Lottery donated $93,000 to defer some of the costs of the renovation project. Indiana State Representative Dennis Avery was instrumental in obtaining money for the remodeling from the Build Indiana Fund.
The current building which was constructed when the department was founded in 1959 was built with hollow concrete blocks and a wood roof. Both provided little or no insulation from the heat or cold. The building was renovated that same year to add a raised roof. The 1966 addition had a flat roof.
Instead of purchasing a new station, in 1999 we contracted to have the current building remodeled to more adequately meet our needs. This work should meet our needs for the foreseeable future.
Renovation tasks:
Add additional room on rear of structure for additional quarters for firefighters.
