Folz RD power station (31 images)
On July 14, German Fire Department was dispatched to Folz Rd and
W. Mill Rd to a fire at the Vectren Substation. The first on scene firefighters
found a large transformer smoking. A Vectren employee was on a ladder and had a
extinguisher and a shot of chemicals caused a flair-up of flames and boiling
oil. Since Vectren had experts on the scene they advised that the transformer
oil was hot enough that the chemicals from one extinguisher was not having any
effect. The extinguishers on the apparatus on scene were quickly used with little
change. Firefighter Fechtmeister remembered that there were some more
extinguishers in the storage shed at company 9. They were brought to the scene
and used. Firefighter Laugel was chosen to use the extinguishers. Since he could feel a tingle in his hands he used a lineman's gloves and had no more sensation. Firefighter
Carr used a thermo image camera and found that the temperature was 500 degrees.
Assured by the electricians that a hose stream could be safely used to cool the transformer,
a stream was directed onto it until the reading was down to 250 degrees. Vectren took
over and brought in a new transformer and removed the burnt one.
