Ike-Sept14_08 (16 images)
On September 14, Hurricane Ike arrived in the Evansville
area. German Township Fire Department was pretty lucky until 10:23 when there
first "investigation wires down.." dispatch hit. After the second alarm the duty
officer for that day Captain Craig became a manager of equipment, acknowledging
the dispatches and sending crews to the scenes. Ther were 14 runs during this
time.
One of the more interesting runs was on New Harmnoy Rd, where a transformer had
exploded and the oil leaked around the pole. A spark set it on fire and
threatened to burn the pole. The crew got water on it and stopped the fire from
spreading. Just as they relaxed, the transformer on the pole behind the engine exploded with a large
bang. Needless to say, they all ducked!!
