Lieutenant Matt Kirkman
November 9, 2003
We will never forget you!

Lieutenant Matt Kirkman served the German Township Fire Department first as a volunteer and then as a member of our career staff. Matt died in a motor vehicle accident on November 9th, 2003. Matt was a passenger in a vehicle driven by an alcohol impaired driver. Matt was 21 years old and had served the GTFD for 5 years. He left behind Father Jay, Mother Becky and Brother Mark. We miss the smile, attitude and friendship of our brother Matt. Matt is in our prayers as we move the fire department and community forward. The new members of the FD are introduced to our brother during orientation and become a part of his legacy as we continue to provide superb and effective service.

The Matthew Kirkman Fire Science Scholarship at Vincennes University was honored by a plaque
at the Fire Science building. The Scholarship was started in 2004 to honor
Matt. The current value is $16000.00 and it is about to award two
scholarships this spring. The plaque shows the picture of Matt with a cat
(above on left) and the writing of the chief (see below).
At Matt's grave, a plaque includes the a writing by Chief
Buckman has been added along with a new tree (see below).
To donate to the scholarship, call Jay Kirkman 812-459-1278.
